A New Start in District 4

Fort Lauderdale is going through a change of life.  It’s not quite a midlife crisis, but after nearly 100 years it’s not surprising that we’re still experiencing growing pains.  We’re not the teenage spring break capital anymore, and also not the stereotypical Florida retirement community that people think of.

In another time they’d say we’re trying to “find ourselves.”  I think we know who we are.

We’re a city that endured bruising budget cuts during a fiscal crisis just a few years ago, and rebounded stronger than ever.  Now, though, the falling national economy is threatening our success, requiring a hard look at our budget once again.

We’re a city that is learning to balance the necessity of development in our downtown with the desire to preserve the integrity of our neighborhoods – the historical backbone of Fort Lauderdale.

We’re a city that thrives on the marine industry, demanding that we preserve access to our waterfront so that we support this key element of our local economy.  It’s too easy to forget that our nickname – “The Venice of America” – is a reality as well as a slogan.

And we’re a city that wants to support our public safety officers and first responders, and ensure that their time and resources are spent on real issues and problems.

Fort Lauderdale is unlike anywhere else in South Florida.  As a seventh-generation Floridian, I know what I’m talking about!  My family has lived here since before Florida joined the Union.  We’ve worked in the major industries in the state, from sugar to tourism to law enforcement.  (It’s rumored that my Aunt XX of Stuart was the first female chief of police in Florida.)

I’m a product of Florida’s great university system, first putting myself through Florida Atlantic University and then earning a partial scholarship to the University of Miami School of Law.

I want to take what Florida has given me and my family over the years and put it to use in my hometown.  I am running to represent Fort Lauderdale’s District 4 on the City Commission – the southernmost and geographically largest part of Fort Lauderdale.  The district runs from Las Olas Blvd. in the north, to Fort Lauderdale Beach in the east, down to the airport in the south, and out to Rt. 441 in the west.

As one of only five representatives on the panel, the Commissioner for District 4 oversees a diverse district with challenges unlike the rest of the city, and yet one that is an integral part of the whole of our community.

It’s a challenge I relish.  My agenda is simple: ensuring fiscal responsibility, preserving the integrity of our neighborhoods, supporting our law enforcement professionals, and fostering our city’s essential marine industry.

My Florida roots are long, and my gaze is forward.  I may be steeped in Florida history, but I’m focused on Fort Lauderdale’s future.
